Can I keep my old thermostat when I replace the system?
Sometimes, but often not. Newer equipment uses staging and communication that older controls cannot speak to. We check the wire count and the equipment requirements first, then tell you plainly whether the existing thermostat will work or needs replacing.
Does a smart thermostat need a C wire?
Most do. That common wire carries steady power to the thermostat. If your wall has only four or five conductors we look at what is available at the air handler and either repurpose a wire or add an adapter so the control stays powered.
How long does a thermostat replacement take?
A straight swap on a compatible system usually runs under an hour, including the test of cooling, heating and fan. Adding wire, correcting a heat pump changeover setting or setting up an app account adds time. Zoning controls are a longer job.
Will a new thermostat fix my hot and cold rooms?
Usually not by itself. Uneven rooms come from duct sizing, leakage and where the return sits. A thermostat only measures one spot. Zoning controls with dampers and separate sensors can help, and we walk your ducts before recommending it.
Can you add zoning to the system I already have?
Often yes, if the ductwork can be divided sensibly and the equipment can handle reduced airflow when one zone closes. We inspect the trunk lines and the blower first. If zoning is a poor fit we say so instead of selling the panel.
Where should the thermostat be mounted?
On an interior wall about five feet up, away from direct sun, supply vents, lamps and exterior doors. Relocating a thermostat off a sunlit wall solves a surprising number of complaints about a house that never reaches the setting.
