What the job involves
A whole-home dehumidifier is a separate piece of equipment, usually set in a closet, garage or attic space near the air handler, with its own ducting and a condensate drain. We size it to the square footage and how leaky the house is, then decide whether it feeds into the return, uses dedicated supply runs, or both. Wiring, drain routing and a humidity control on the wall are all part of the install. Most jobs take one visit, sometimes two if the drain run is long.
What we check or install
Before we quote anything we measure indoor humidity in a few rooms, look at the existing ductwork, and check whether your AC is short cycling or oversized, because that alone can leave a house damp. We look at crawlspace and attic conditions, dryer and bath fan venting, and any standing water near the outdoor unit. If the fix is a duct repair or a refrigerant charge issue, we say so. If a dehumidifier is the right answer, we install the unit, run the drain, wire the control and set the target humidity with you.
How we decide it is the right call
We look for humidity that stays above roughly 60 percent indoors while the AC is running normally and the equipment tests out fine. Sticky air in spring and fall, when it is too mild for the AC to run long enough to dry the house, is the clearest sign. Damp sandy soil under a house, well pump lines sweating, and heat pumps that cool without long runtimes all push us the same direction. If the numbers do not support it, we will tell you to skip it.

Will running my AC longer do the same thing?
Sometimes, but you end up overcooling the house to dry it. A dehumidifier removes moisture without dropping the temperature, which matters most in mild weather when the AC barely runs long enough to do any drying.
Where does the water go?
To a condensate drain, either into an existing drain line, a dedicated line to the outside, or a small pump if gravity will not cooperate. We check the routing during the visit so it does not back up into the house.
Does it need maintenance?
Yes. It has a filter that needs changing on a schedule and a drain that can clog. We check both during regular heating and cooling maintenance visits, along with the humidity control settings.
