What refrigerant leak repair actually involves
Refrigerant does not get used up. If the charge is low, it left through a hole somewhere, so the first job is finding it. We pressure test and use electronic detection and dye where it helps, working the evaporator coil, the service valves, the brazed joints and the line set. Once we know where it is, we repair or replace that section, pull a vacuum to get moisture and air out of the system, then weigh in the correct charge and confirm the numbers hold.
What we check and what we replace
Evaporator coils are the most common source, especially older ones, and a leaking coil usually needs replacing rather than patching. Line sets get chewed up where they run through a wall or sit in sandy soil, and Schrader valves and service caps leak quietly for years. On heat pumps we also look at the reversing valve and the accumulator joints. We check superheat and subcooling before and after, because a correct charge is measured, not guessed at by feel.
How we decide repair is the right call
We look at where the leak is, how old the system is, and what refrigerant it uses. A valve or a line set repair on a sound system is straightforward and worth doing. A leaking coil in a system that has already lost charge twice is a different conversation, and older refrigerants get expensive and hard to source. Can you just add refrigerant to get me through the summer?
We can top off a system to get you cooling, but we will tell you it is temporary. The refrigerant will leave the same way it did before, and running low on charge is hard on the compressor.
How long does leak detection take?
Simple leaks at valves or accessible joints often turn up the same visit. Slow leaks inside a coil or buried in a line set can take a pressure test and a return trip to confirm. We will tell you which we are dealing with.
Why is my AC line frozen if refrigerant is low?
Low charge drops the pressure in the evaporator coil, so it runs colder than designed and moisture freezes onto it. Shut the cooling off, leave the fan running to thaw it, and call us.
