What duct sealing actually involves
We start in the attic or crawl space with the air handler running, tracing the supply trunk and every branch to find where air is pushing out. Loose boot connections, separated flex, torn insulation jackets and open plenum seams are the usual offenders. We seal with mastic and mesh tape at the joints, reattach and strap flex that has sagged off its collar, then re-insulate what we opened. A blower running while we work tells us quickly whether the leak stopped.
What we check and what we install
We check static pressure and airflow at the registers first, because weak air at a far bedroom can be a leak, a crushed run, or an undersized return. We look at the return side hard, since a leaking return pulls attic air and dust straight into the system. Sealing work usually means mastic on the plenum and boots, new collars and straps, replacement sections of flex where the inner liner is torn, and fresh insulation over anything we disturb.
How we decide sealing is the right call
Sealing is the right call when the ducts are structurally sound and the leaks are at connections, which is common in homes across the region where flex has sagged in a hot attic for years. If the inner liner is shredded, the runs are badly undersized, or rodents have opened long tears, patching is throwing good money after bad and we will say so. We would rather tell you the run needs replacing than seal around a problem you will call us about again.

Will duct sealing fix one room that stays hot?
Sometimes. If that room's run is leaking or has come loose at the boot, sealing helps a lot. If the run is too small or too long, sealing alone will not fix it and we will explain what would.
How long does duct sealing take?
Most homes take part of a day, depending on attic access, how many runs need attention, and the summer heat up there. Larger systems or crawl space work can run longer. We will give you a time frame after we look.
Can I seal ducts myself with duct tape?
Duct tape dries out and lets go in attic heat, usually within a season or two. Mastic and mesh stay put. Attic and crawl space work also puts you near wiring and sharp metal, so give us a call instead.
