What AC compressor repair actually involves
Compressor work is refrigerant and high voltage work, so it happens outside at the condenser with the power cut at the disconnect. We recover the refrigerant, open the sealed system, remove the failed compressor and install the correct replacement for that model, then pull a deep vacuum and weigh in a fresh charge. Most compressor failures are caused by something else, so we also correct the underlying fault. Skipping that step is how a second compressor dies the same summer. This is not a job to attempt yourself.
What we check and what we install
Before we condemn a compressor we check the easy causes: a failed run capacitor, a burned contactor, low voltage at the unit, a clogged filter and a condenser coil packed with grass clippings or sand. Any of those can make a good compressor sound dead. If the windings are actually shorted or open, we install a matched replacement compressor along with a new capacitor, contactor and liquid line drier. On heat pumps we also test the reversing valve and defrost control, since those stress the compressor year round.
How we decide repair or replacement
Age, refrigerant type and the condition of the coils drive the decision. On a system under about ten years old with a sound indoor coil and a refrigerant that is still available, a compressor swap makes sense and buys you years. On an older unit with a leaking coil, rusted cabinet and obsolete refrigerant, we will say so rather than sink money into it. We give you both numbers and the reasoning, then you choose. Long drives out to rural routes mean we would rather fix it right once.

Can a bad capacitor look like a failed compressor?
Yes, and it often does. A failed run capacitor leaves the compressor humming or clicking without starting. We test it electrically before condemning anything, because a capacitor is a far smaller repair.
How long does an AC compressor replacement take?
Most take the better part of a day once the correct compressor is on hand. Recovery, the swap, a deep vacuum and weighing in the charge all take time. Rushing the vacuum causes repeat failures.
Why did my compressor fail so young?
Usually a cause outside the compressor: low refrigerant from a leak, restricted airflow from a dirty filter or blocked coil, or a weak capacitor making it strain on every start. We find and fix that too.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptoms
You describe what changed. No cold air, a breaker that keeps tripping, water near the air handler, a smell, a noise. That gives us a head start on parts before we ever leave the shop.
- Step 2
We diagnose on site
A technician checks the thermostat, the electrical side, airflow through the filter and coil, refrigerant behavior and the outdoor unit. We look at the whole system, because a frozen coil usually points somewhere else.
- Step 3
You decide the repair
We explain what failed, what it takes to fix it, and how long the rest of the system is likely to hold up. You pick the repair. We do not start work you did not approve.

Why homeowners call us
- Rural routes are normal for usWe drive long stretches between calls and we plan for it. Trucks carry the common heat pump and air conditioner repair parts so a diagnosis does not turn into a second trip on a hot afternoon.
- Heat pumps and sandy soilMost homes we visit run a heat pump, and sand, lawn clippings and pollen pack the outdoor coil fast. We clear it, check the defrost side in winter, and show you what we found before we close it up.
- Well water housesHomes on well water bring their own quirks, from pump-driven electrical noise to hard water on drain lines and condensate pans. We know where those systems clog and where the slow leaks hide.
- Heating repair tooCold snaps in this region are short and hard. We do heating repair and heater repair on heat pumps, strip heat and furnaces, so one crew handles your system in July and again in January.
- All major brands, gas & electricOne independent crew for Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, Rheem and more.
- Straight answersIf a system is not worth repairing, we say so, often right on the phone.
