What the job involves
A capacitor gives the compressor and fan motor the push they need to start and keep turning. When it weakens, the motor draws hard, overheats and trips the breaker, or the fan simply sits still. We shut power down at the disconnect, discharge and test the capacitor against its rated values, then check the motor windings and bearings. If the capacitor is the only failed part, that is a short visit. If the motor has burned out, we match a replacement to the unit and set the correct rotation and blade clearance.
What we check and install
We start with the electrical side: contactor, disconnect, wiring at the motor and the capacitor terminals. Heat and humidity in this region are hard on those parts, and sandy grit works its way into outdoor fan bearings. We check amp draw against the nameplate, spin the fan by hand for drag, and look at the blade for cracks. On blower motors we also check the wheel for buildup that loads the motor down. Replacement capacitors and motors are matched to the system, and we retest airflow and temperature split before we leave.
How we decide it is the right call
We test, we do not guess. A capacitor reading well below its rating explains a hum with no spin, and we replace it. A motor with shorted windings or seized bearings needs replacing regardless of the capacitor. If the motor tests fine and the real problem is a failed contactor, low refrigerant or a control board, we tell you that instead. On older systems with several failures at once we will lay out what a repair covers and what it does not, then let you decide.

Why does my outdoor unit hum but the fan not turn?
That is the classic sign of a failed run capacitor, though a seized fan motor does the same thing. Switch the thermostat off so the compressor is not straining, and let us test both parts before anything else runs.
Can I just replace the capacitor myself?
No. Capacitors hold a charge after power is off and sit next to high-voltage wiring. This is not homeowner work. Safe checks are limited to the thermostat, breaker, filter and clearing debris around the outdoor unit.
Will a new capacitor fix a motor that already burned out?
No. A weak capacitor can be what killed the motor, so we replace both when testing shows it. Putting a new capacitor on a shorted motor just fails again, usually within days.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptoms
You describe what changed. No cold air, a breaker that keeps tripping, water near the air handler, a smell, a noise. That gives us a head start on parts before we ever leave the shop.
- Step 2
We diagnose on site
A technician checks the thermostat, the electrical side, airflow through the filter and coil, refrigerant behavior and the outdoor unit. We look at the whole system, because a frozen coil usually points somewhere else.
- Step 3
You decide the repair
We explain what failed, what it takes to fix it, and how long the rest of the system is likely to hold up. You pick the repair. We do not start work you did not approve.

Why homeowners call us
- Rural routes are normal for usWe drive long stretches between calls and we plan for it. Trucks carry the common heat pump and air conditioner repair parts so a diagnosis does not turn into a second trip on a hot afternoon.
- Heat pumps and sandy soilMost homes we visit run a heat pump, and sand, lawn clippings and pollen pack the outdoor coil fast. We clear it, check the defrost side in winter, and show you what we found before we close it up.
- Well water housesHomes on well water bring their own quirks, from pump-driven electrical noise to hard water on drain lines and condensate pans. We know where those systems clog and where the slow leaks hide.
- Heating repair tooCold snaps in this region are short and hard. We do heating repair and heater repair on heat pumps, strip heat and furnaces, so one crew handles your system in July and again in January.
- All major brands, gas & electricOne independent crew for Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, Rheem and more.
- Straight answersIf a system is not worth repairing, we say so, often right on the phone.
