Homeowners' pick for heating and cooling across north Florida and the Suwannee Valley

Heat Pump Not Heating

When your heat pump runs but the air coming out of the vents feels cool, we diagnose and repair it. We work on heat pumps in homes across Florida, Georgia and South Carolina, and a no-heat call gets scheduled ahead of comfort work. Before you call, check that the thermostat is set to heat and has fresh batteries, look for a tripped breaker, and change a dirty filter. If it still will not heat, call us and we will get a technician on the road to you.

What A No-Heat Heat Pump Call Involves

A heat pump heats by running the cooling cycle backwards, so when it stops heating the problem is usually in the reversing valve, the refrigerant charge, the outdoor fan, the defrost control or the backup heat strips. We start at the thermostat, confirm what the system is actually being told to do, then read the outdoor unit while it runs. Measuring temperatures at the supply and return tells us quickly whether you are getting real heat, strip heat only, or nothing at all.

What We Check And Repair

We check thermostat wiring and staging, the contactor and capacitor, the outdoor fan motor, the defrost board and sensor, the reversing valve and its solenoid, and refrigerant pressures against outdoor temperature. Electric backup heat gets checked at the sequencers, elements and limits. On rural homes with sandy soil, we also clear grass, sand and leaves packed against the outdoor coil, since a smothered coil cannot pull heat from the air. Repairs range from a replaced capacitor to a reversing valve or refrigerant leak repair.

How We Decide Repair Is The Right Call

We look at what failed, what it costs to put right, and how the rest of the system is holding up. A defrost board, a fan motor or a contactor on a healthy unit is a straightforward repair. A failed compressor or a leaking coil on an older heat pump is a different conversation, and we will lay out repair versus replacement in plain numbers before anything is ordered. If your system is running on strip heat alone, we tell you that too, because electric heat runs your bill up fast.

Heat Pump Not Heating — quick answers

Why is my heat pump blowing cool air in heating mode?

Often it is defrost mode, which is normal and lasts a few minutes. If cool air continues, the reversing valve, refrigerant charge or outdoor fan may have failed and the system needs a technician.

Is ice on the outdoor unit in winter a problem?

A light frost that clears on its own is normal. Thick ice that stays, or ice covering the whole coil, points to a defrost control or refrigerant problem. Turn the system off and call us.

My heat pump keeps up on mild days but not cold ones. Why?

That usually means the backup heat is not coming on, or the heat pump is low on capacity from a refrigerant leak. We test staging and pressures to tell which one you have.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptoms

You describe what changed. No cold air, a breaker that keeps tripping, water near the air handler, a smell, a noise. That gives us a head start on parts before we ever leave the shop.

  2. Step 2

    We diagnose on site

A technician checks the thermostat, the electrical side, airflow through the filter and coil, refrigerant behavior and the outdoor unit. We look at the whole system, because a frozen coil usually points somewhere else.

  3. Step 3

    You decide the repair

We explain what failed, what it takes to fix it, and how long the rest of the system is likely to hold up. You pick the repair. We do not start work you did not approve.

Why homeowners call us

  • Rural routes are normal for usWe drive long stretches between calls and we plan for it. Trucks carry the common heat pump and air conditioner repair parts so a diagnosis does not turn into a second trip on a hot afternoon.
  • Heat pumps and sandy soilMost homes we visit run a heat pump, and sand, lawn clippings and pollen pack the outdoor coil fast. We clear it, check the defrost side in winter, and show you what we found before we close it up.
  • Well water housesHomes on well water bring their own quirks, from pump-driven electrical noise to hard water on drain lines and condensate pans. We know where those systems clog and where the slow leaks hide.
  • Heating repair tooCold snaps in this region are short and hard. We do heating repair and heater repair on heat pumps, strip heat and furnaces, so one crew handles your system in July and again in January.
  • All major brands, gas & electricOne independent crew for Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, Rheem and more.
  • Straight answersIf a system is not worth repairing, we say so, often right on the phone.
