When the HVAC Keeps Tripping the Breaker
Your AC shuts off, you walk out to the panel, and the breaker is tripped again. You flip it back on and an hour later you are doing the same walk. That breaker is doing its job, and the repeat trip is telling you something in the system is pulling more current than it should. Here is how we sort it out.

First: safety before anything else
1. If you smell gas or burnt rotten eggs, or a carbon monoxide alarm is sounding, leave the building now. Take everyone with you, do not flip any switches, and call 911 or your gas utility from outside. Call us after they clear the home. 2. If you see smoke, scorch marks around the panel, or smell hot plastic, leave and call 911. 3. If the breaker is warm to the touch or buzzing, leave it off and call us. 4. If none of that applies, you can reset the breaker one time. One time only. A breaker that trips a second time is reporting a real fault, and resetting it again puts heat into wiring that is already stressed.
What not to do
Do not hold a breaker in, tape it, or wedge it. Do not swap in a bigger breaker to stop the tripping. The breaker is sized to the wire behind it, and a larger one lets the wire overheat before anything shuts off. Do not open the outdoor disconnect box or the electrical panel cover. Do not touch the capacitor or contactor inside the condenser, even with the power off, because capacitors hold a charge. Do not add refrigerant or attempt anything with the gas train on a furnace. Leave the high voltage and the refrigerant circuit to us. Repeated resets are the single most common way a nuisance trip turns into a burnt compressor.
The safe checks you can do yourself
Five things, all of them low risk. Check that the thermostat has fresh batteries and is set to cool or heat, not on auto with a fighting setpoint. Look at the filter. A filter packed solid chokes airflow, the blower motor works harder, and current climbs. Walk around the outdoor unit and clear grass clippings, oak leaves, sand, and any vines off the coil, keeping about two feet clear all the way around. Confirm supply and return vents are open and not blocked by furniture or rugs. Check whether other things in the house trip too, because that points at the panel rather than the HVAC. Write down what you find before you call.
What usually causes a repeat trip
On the calls we run across our region, the short list is small. A failing capacitor lets the compressor or fan motor draw hard on startup. A pitted contactor arcs and welds. A compressor with worn windings pulls locked rotor amps and trips within seconds. Outdoor units sitting in sandy soil and sprinkler spray get corroded wire nuts and chewed insulation, and we see plenty of ants and mud daubers packed into contactors. On heat pumps, a stuck reversing valve or a bad defrost board makes the unit work against itself. A dirty coil or a blocked blower wheel raises current on both ends. Older panels also have breakers that simply weaken with age and trip below their rating.
When to call us

Can I just keep resetting the breaker until the repair?
No. Reset it once. If it trips again, leave it off and call us. Every reset sends startup current through a fault, which heats wiring and can turn a cheap capacitor failure into a failed compressor.
Why does it only trip on the hottest afternoons?
Heat raises the load and the current. A weak capacitor, dirty coil, or aging compressor may run fine at mild temperatures and cross the breaker's limit only when the outdoor air is at its worst.
Is a bigger breaker a reasonable fix?
Never. The breaker size matches the wire it protects. A larger one lets the wire overheat behind your walls before anything shuts off. The correct fix is finding what is pulling too much current.
