What "blowing warm air" Actually Tells Us
Air moving but no cooling means the indoor blower is working while the refrigeration side is not doing its job. That splits the problem in two. Either the outdoor unit is not running or not running correctly, or it is running but cannot move heat out of the house. Walk outside and listen. If the outdoor unit is silent while the thermostat calls for cooling, we are looking at power, controls or a failed component. If the fan is spinning and the top is blowing warm air like it should, the trouble is more likely refrigerant charge, a coil that cannot breathe, or airflow inside. That one observation saves us time on air conditioning repair calls.
Cause Family One: Settings, Filters And Airflow
This is the cheapest family and it is genuinely common. A thermostat bumped to "fan on" instead of "cool" blows unconditioned air all day. A dead battery in the thermostat can stop the call for cooling entirely. A filter loaded with dust from a sandy yard or a summer of dog hair chokes the return, the indoor coil ices over, and warm air comes out of the vents even though everything else is fine. Closed or blocked supply vents in back bedrooms do the same thing on a smaller scale. On heat pumps we also see a reversing valve stuck in heating mode, which needs a technician but shows up as the same symptom.
Cause Family Two: Power And Controls At The Outdoor Unit
If the outdoor unit is dead quiet, check your breaker panel for a tripped breaker and reset it once. If it trips again, stop and call us. Repeated tripping means something downstream is drawing more current than it should, and hunting for it inside a live disconnect is not homeowner work. Beyond the breaker we find failed contactors, bad capacitors, burnt low voltage wiring chewed by rodents, tripped float switches on a clogged drain pan, and condensate safeties doing exactly what they were designed to do. All of that is high voltage or control diagnosis, so it belongs to whoever brought the meter.
Cause Family Three: Refrigerant, Coils And Compressor
When the outdoor unit runs and the house still will not cool, we look at heat transfer. A condenser coil packed with grass clippings, cottonwood, or dust from a dirt road cannot dump heat, so the system runs and runs while indoor temperatures creep up. Low refrigerant from a leak shows the same way, usually with a frosted line or an iced indoor coil. A compressor that is running but not pumping is the expensive end of this family. None of it is a top-up you do yourself. Refrigerant is pressurized and handling it wrong damages the system, so we test pressures and temperatures before we touch anything.
What You Can Safely Check, And What We Do Differently
Safe checks: set the thermostat to cool and a few degrees below room temperature, replace thermostat batteries, change the filter, open every supply vent, clear leaves and grass two feet back from the outdoor unit, and reset a tripped breaker once. That is the list. If you smell gas near any part of your heating equipment, leave the house first, call 911 or your gas utility from outside, then call us. When we arrive for air conditioner repair we measure. Voltage and amp draw, static pressure, temperature split across the coil, and system pressures against outdoor conditions. Measurement is what separates a real diagnosis from a guess and a parts bill.

Why is my AC blowing warm air only in the afternoon?
Late day heat pushes the system to its limit, so a marginal problem shows up then. Common causes are a dirty condenser coil, low refrigerant, or a unit slightly undersized for the added heat load. We measure under those conditions.
Can I add refrigerant myself to fix it?
No. Refrigerant is under high pressure, and adding it without measuring only masks a leak that will empty again. Wrong charge also shortens compressor life. We find the leak, repair what we can, then charge to spec.
My indoor coil is frozen. Should I keep the AC running?
Turn cooling off and leave the fan on to thaw the ice, which can take a few hours. Change the filter while you wait. If it freezes again after thawing, call us for AC repair before running it more.
