What a Clogged Filter Does Over Months
A dirty filter starves the system for air. The blower keeps pulling, the indoor coil gets too cold, and moisture that should drain away freezes on the fins instead. Once ice forms, airflow drops further and the whole thing spirals. Over a season we start seeing dirt pushed past the filter and packed into the coil, which means the system runs longer to reach the same temperature. On a heat pump that shows up as long cycles that never satisfy the thermostat. On the furnace side, restricted return air pushes heat exchanger temperatures higher than they were designed for. None of that fails on day one. It fails in year three, all at once.
The Habit That Prevents Almost All of It
Pick a day you already remember and tie the filter to it. Power bill arrives, first of the month, whatever sticks. Buy filters four or six at a time and keep them in a closet near the return grille so there is no trip to the store standing between you and the swap. Write the install date on the cardboard edge with a marker. When you pull the old one, hold it up to a window. If light barely passes through, you waited too long, and next time you shorten the interval. That one look tells you more about your house than any chart we could print.
How Often, Realistically
For most homes across Florida, Georgia and South Carolina, a one inch filter wants changing every 30 to 60 days. Thicker media filters in a dedicated cabinet, the four or five inch kind, usually run three to six months. Those are starting points, not rules. Shorten the interval if you have dogs or cats, if anyone in the house has allergies or asthma, or if you run the system nearly year round, which most of us do here. Rural homes on sandy lots and dirt roads load up faster than you would think, especially with windows open in spring. Homes that sit empty part of the year can stretch it. Check monthly either way and let the filter tell you.
Warning Signs You Already Waited Too Long
Weak air out of the vents while the outdoor unit runs hard is the first one. Then a musty smell when the system kicks on, water around the indoor unit or a wet spot on the ceiling below it, and ice on the copper lines outside. If the system runs and runs without cooling, or shuts itself off and restarts a few minutes later, restricted airflow is high on the list. Dust settling fast on furniture after you just cleaned is another tell. Any of those, put in a fresh filter, confirm your vents are open and clear debris away from the outdoor unit. If it does not straighten out within a few hours, call us for air conditioning repair before the coil ices solid.
When a New Filter Is Not the Answer
A filter change fixes a filter problem. It does not fix a failing blower motor, a low refrigerant charge, a clogged drain line or a bad capacitor, and those produce some of the same symptoms. If you have kept up with filters and airflow is still poor, something else is going on and we would rather look at it early. Same goes for heating season. Weak heat, short cycles or a system that trips its breaker needs heating repair, not another filter. If you ever smell gas, leave the house first, then call 911 or your gas utility from outside, then call us. We cover long rural routes and will get a truck to you.
Filter Changes — common questions
Does a more expensive filter last longer?
Not always. A denser filter catches more but also restricts airflow more, so it can load up faster in a dusty house. Thick media filters in a cabinet last longest. One inch pleated filters still need monthly checks.
Can I just vacuum the filter and reuse it?
No, unless it is a washable type designed for it. Vacuuming a disposable pleated filter tears the media and leaves gaps that let dirt reach the coil. Replace it. Washable filters must dry fully before going back in.
Which way does the arrow point?
The arrow points in the direction air flows, meaning toward the blower and away from the return grille. Installed backward, the filter loses stiffness and can collapse into the blower, which is worth a service call.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptoms
You describe what changed. No cold air, a breaker that keeps tripping, water near the air handler, a smell, a noise. That gives us a head start on parts before we ever leave the shop.
- Step 2
We diagnose on site
A technician checks the thermostat, the electrical side, airflow through the filter and coil, refrigerant behavior and the outdoor unit. We look at the whole system, because a frozen coil usually points somewhere else.
- Step 3
You decide the repair
We explain what failed, what it takes to fix it, and how long the rest of the system is likely to hold up. You pick the repair. We do not start work you did not approve.

Why homeowners call us
- Rural routes are normal for usWe drive long stretches between calls and we plan for it. Trucks carry the common heat pump and air conditioner repair parts so a diagnosis does not turn into a second trip on a hot afternoon.
- Heat pumps and sandy soilMost homes we visit run a heat pump, and sand, lawn clippings and pollen pack the outdoor coil fast. We clear it, check the defrost side in winter, and show you what we found before we close it up.
- Well water housesHomes on well water bring their own quirks, from pump-driven electrical noise to hard water on drain lines and condensate pans. We know where those systems clog and where the slow leaks hide.
- Heating repair tooCold snaps in this region are short and hard. We do heating repair and heater repair on heat pumps, strip heat and furnaces, so one crew handles your system in July and again in January.
- All major brands, gas & electricOne independent crew for Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, Rheem and more.
- Straight answersIf a system is not worth repairing, we say so, often right on the phone.
